Bullion

What exactly are bullion cubes and where can you buy them?

I'm wondering what bullion cubes are, what you use them for, and where you get them?

  1. A bouillon cube (US) or stock cube (UK) is dehydrated broth (bouillon in French) or stock formed into a small cube (about 15 mm on a side). It is made by dehydrating vegetables, meat stock, a small portion of solid fat (such as hydrogenated oil), and seasonings (usually including large quantities of salt and monosodium glutamate) and shaping them into a small cube. Dehydrated broth is also available in granular form.

Broth made from rehydrated cubes is inferior in taste to fresh broth because of its high salt content and flavors disrupted by the boiling process; however, it is convenient and cheap, and is widely used in British cooking to add flavor to a dish.

  18. Boullion are basically chicken or beef broth, or whatever flavoring that is available, that is made in the shape of a cube instead of just coming in a jar. You have to unwrap each one individually and then you dissolve them in water to make soups and gravies, whatever else you would like to make.

  33. They are beef stock, chicken stock, or vegetable stock condensed into a cube. You can get them at any grocery store. They are normally by the soups. You can use them to make soup, mix them into stew, use them to marinade. You can use them in just about anything, as long as there is some liquid. I used to know a boy who would eat them plain. They are too salty for me. I hope this helped.
  34. Yeah, its been answered a thousand times before me, but I wanted to add an additional bit of info. If you want good beef or chicken stock, don't use bullion cubes. Bullion cubes have little or no flavor and they'll make even the best soup recipes only so so. If you don't have the patience or time to make your own stock, use canned stock...not as good as homemade but MUCH better than bullion. This is also available in any grocery store.
